University of Health Sciences Antigua to Offer Combined MD/MPH Degree

CHICAGO – The University of Health Sciences Antigua is excited to announce a new partnership with Benedictine University, Lisle, Illinois, which will allow students to complete a combined MD/MPH degree.

“The combined MD/MPH is a growing trend and we are excited to partner with Benedictine University to offer this to UHSA students,” says Adedayo Akande, Vice Chairman, UHSA Board of Trustees.

Benedictine University’s Master of Public Health (MPH) program is built on a base of core courses that teach the foundations of public health concepts and processes. Each course has a conceptual, factual, and skill base.

Students will complete coursework in biostatistics, epidemiology, management, policy, behavioral and social aspects of public health, environmental health and biology provides a scientific and practical base for public health practice. Elective courses may be taken in a variety of areas such as health education, finance, law and information technology.

CHICAGO – The University of Health Sciences Antigua has partnered with Crowne Clinicals to provide its students with personalized, streamlined assistance in obtaining the best possible back-to-back clinical schedule with the goal of minimizing any rotation gaps.

“As your personal clinical concierge, we take a family-style approach to your experience where care is always given to the quality of clinical training, the delicate relationship between the student, physician, hospital, and medical school, and clinical clerkship logistics,” says Savi Rajpoot, Crowne Clinicals Clinical Operations Manager.

Beginning this semester, UHSA students will have assistance:

•     Scheduling clerkships sequentially
•     Collecting & submitting evaluations to your clinical department
•     Confirming physician ACGME-accreditation status
•     Providing open lines of communication with your medical school

University of Health Sciences Antigua Announces Partnership with Jackson Park Hospital in Chicago

CHICAGO – The University of Health Sciences Antigua is thrilled to announce a new partnership with Jackson Park Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, which will allow students to spend their fifth semester (16-weeks) dedicated to USMLE Step 1 preparation and completing an Advanced Introduction to Clinical Medicine course.

Beginning in the fall 2012 term, students will spend the first eight weeks of their fifth semester preparing for the USMLE Step 1, which includes live lectures provided by highly experienced faculty. The second half of the course is known as Advanced Introduction to Clinical Medicine. During the final eight weeks, students interact with patients and develop the skills required to complete diagnostic oriented physical examinations, History & Physical and SOAP notes.

Alumnus appointed Chairperson of AAP Committee

We are pleased to announce that UHSA Graduate (1991) Dr. Rana Chakraborty has been appointed to Chairperson of the Committee on Pediatric AIDS (COPA) for the American Academy of Pediatrics.  In this new position, Dr. Chakraborty will be actively involved in chapter activities and bring his expertise and considerations to the chapter.

Congratulations to Dr. Chakraborty on being appointed chairperson of this important Academy committee. Your accomplishment is a true testament to the outstanding quality of education at UHSA and we are proud to be your Alma mater.

About Dr. Rana Chakraborty

UHSA Graduate Rana ChakrabortyDr Rana Chakraborty has been an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases since September 2008, having previously completed Pediatric ID training in The Bronx, NY, Newark NJ, Oxford, England and Nairobi, Kenya. His interests include understanding the immunovirology of HIV infection in children, Pediatric HIV care and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. He is Director of the Pediatric center at the Ponce clinic – the largest facility in the state of Georgia offering care to HIV-infected infants, children, adolescents and their families.

Current areas of research include eliciting potential correlates of protection at the placental interface and potential application to HIV vaccine development, and drug metabolism of antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected adolescents and children. In both fields there is a relative paucity of scientific studies and evidence-based literature.

Prior to coming to Emory University, Dr Chakraborty worked as a Consultant in Pediatric ID at St George’s Hospital, London and developed and published UK guidelines on Pediatric HIV care including management of opportunistic infections and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. He sits on a number of national and international committees including the Children’s HIV Association of the UK, the Committee on Pediatric AIDS under the AAP and The DHHS Panel on Treatment of HIV-Infected Pregnant Women and Prevention of Perinatal Transmission.

Founders day shall be a day to thank God for what He has done for UHSA and to remember the founders, Dr. Yele Akande, Chief Harry Akande and the Akande family, as well as the history of the school, and, those persons who assisted in the early years.

October 24th, 2009 was the date of Dr. Yele Akande’s passing. As Co-Founder of UHSA, he was the longest standing President and Chairman. He will always be remembered for his tireless work, innovative ideas and sacrifices which have made UHSA an institution known globally.

Movie Premier “The Skin” – Sat Aug 6th

On Saturday August 6th at 7PM, Howard and Mitzi Allen of HAMA Productions will be having a movie premier on campus.

Howard and Mitzi are some of the most popular movie producers in the region.  After the movie, you will have the opportunity to interact with the producers.

Their new movie is “The Skin.” One of the stars in the movie is Jeff Stewart, a popular English actor. UHSA faculty, staff and students will be able to attend free of charge, but the general public will be required to pay EC $20.00 per person. Announcements will be made on Antigua radio and tickets can be purchased at on campus.

Financial assistance is available at UHSA dependant on financial need. Students accepted to the UHSA medical school will need to contact the Financial Assistance Department for information regarding the program.

UHSA welcomes London Metropolitan University students

Students enrolled in the Biomedical Sciences leading to MD program will be arriving in Antigua to begin their summer school module on June 21st 2010 at the UHSA Piccadilly campus.

This unique program is offered in conjunction with London Metropolitan University.  The program offers a combined Biomedical Sciences pathway to MD Program that enables qualified individuals to complete requirements of both the B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees. The program enables students to be accepted to both institutions through a single joint admission process.

London Metropolitan University is the largest single university in London with more than 34,000 students and was originally established in 1848. It is the most popular university in London with international students and the second most popular choice with all international students coming to the UK.

Graduation 2009/10 and Memorial for Dr. Yele Akande, Chairman and Founder

The University of Health Sciences Antigua School of Medicine announces that its Graduation 2009/10 and Memorial for Dr. Yele Akande, Chairman and Founder, will be held on August 14, 2010 at 4:30 pm on the UHSA campus in Antigua.

Because the previous date was postponed, we would like to thank the Jolly Beach Hotel and the Grand Royal Antiguan Hotel for accommodating the change. We would also like to thank American Airlines for their assistance in providing a discount for our graduates and their guests. Above all, we thank our graduates for their understanding and we are very proud of their success.

Although many of our graduates have already received their diplomas after completion of their clinical training in the United States, the remainder of the diplomas will be mailed in order to facilitate the start of residency training on July 1st.

We look forward to the August commencement ceremony where 62 students will be established as medical doctors, one of the greatest and most honorable professions in the world. Congratulations and best wishes to our graduates!

The University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA) announced today the launch of MyUHSA, the first generation of its Student portal.  MyUHSA, powered by Focus Software, is a Student Information System solution that provides students, faculty and staff with instant access to academic information.
