Our Rich History

UHSA was founded in 1982 in Antigua and Barbuda by Dr. Yele Akande with a clear vision: to create a medical school that prepares students from around the world for successful careers in medicine through strong foundational sciences and early clinical exposure.

Established on the historic grounds of the former NASA Apollo Tracking Station at Dow’s Hill, UHSA quickly became one of the first institutions in the region to integrate modern educational technology with a U.S.-modeled medical curriculum.

Over four decades, UHSA has educated physicians who now practice across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, and other parts of the world. The university remains privately owned and mission-driven, focused on maintaining high academic standards while providing opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds.

Today, UHSA continues to build on its legacy by combining a rigorous academic foundation with global clinical training opportunities and a commitment to educating compassionate, practice-ready physicians.
