YOUR GUIDE TO LOAN REPAYMENT
Medical school involves a significant investment of time and money. For many students, their desire to help others is tempered by the need to pay back students loans.
Medical students who may be strongly interested in careers in primary care specialties – family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics – often shy away from these specialties because they fear not making enough money to pay off their student loans. When this happens, communities go without care, and new physicians may find that their hearts remain in primary care even as they practice a higher paying specialty.
Loan repayment options offer a way for medical students to have qualifying loan debt paid off while serving communities who need their services. And while such may be most attractive to those working in primary care, there are loan repayment options available for all specialties.
The primary loan repayment options available to medical graduates in the United States include the following:
Indian Health Services
National Health Services Corps (NHSC)
NHSC Student to Service
State Loan Repayment Programs (SLRP)
Independent State Programs
Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Community-based or Hospital/Healthcare System-based Programs
United States Public Health Service (USPHS)
To learn more about these programs, including eligibility requirements, visit the Loan Repayment page of the National Rural Recruitment and Retention Network. This page provides links to each of the above programs, information, as well as downloadable guide to loan repayment programs.
Please note, the University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA) does not administer any loan forgiveness programs, nor does UHSA play a role in determining eligibility of students or graduates for such. Students and graduates should do their own research on eligibility for loan forgiveness programs.
